I walk by Nicholas Ungar Furs every morning on the way to work. It’s not uncommon to find protestors perched across the street, chanting some haikus about animal rights or whatever. The scene is generally peaceful. Mostly protestors just maintaining their protestor cred.
Things turned tragic today at NW Yamhill and 11th around 11 a.m. when 26-year-old Daniel Shaull allegedly doused himself in gasoline, set himself ablaze and attempted to walk into the fur store. This happened just after 11 a.m. this morning at one of Portland’s busier downtown intersections. Shaull died earlier this evening. (You can read more about it here.)
Whether it was a tragic accident or an attempt at martyrdom, who knows?
I don’t really have a lot to say about this story. Some things are just too bizarre for comment. I don’t own any fur, but I’d like a nice faux mink coat someday. Who wouldn’t? (Well, you know.)
You could say I’m winning the War on Fur by losing the War on Poverty. Your welcome, animal rights activists.
